Ernest Brown, a former high ranking Chicago Police official has died after suffering an apparent heart attack at a South Loop restaurant Saturday, officials said.

Brown, 63, was pronounced dead Saturday at 3:41 p.m. at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Brown, of the city’s South Side, suffered a possible heart attack at a restaurant in the 800 block of South State Street, officials said.

"Ernie was a multi-faceted boss who understood the mission and always had the best interests of the community and the people with whom he worked at heart,’’ said Chicago Police Town Hall District Cmdr. Marc Buslik.

Brown served for nearly 30 years within the Chicago Police Department. He was Deputy Superintendent under Supt. Jody Weis and was considered a possibility for superintendent himself after Weis left.

Brown was briefly Chief of Patrol under Supt. Garry McCarthy before he was sworn in as Darien's top law enforcement officer in November 2011.

He later accepted the post of executive director of the Cook County Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

“We were saddened to learn today of the passing of Ernie Brown,’’ said Frank Shuftan, spokesman for Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones.’’
