The death sentences handed to Ali, Sami and Abbas were based on 'confessions' <a href="http://deathpenaltynews.blogspot.com/2017/01/bahrainis-protest-over-fears-for-three.html" target="_blank">extracted through torture, and the trial an utter sham</a>.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> "It would be shameful if the UK continued to support Bahrain's security apparatus and Ministry of Interior in the face of such terrible abuses. The British Government must urgently review its close relations with the Kingdom, and make clear that it condemns these appalling crimes."</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> "The execution of these torture victims was made possible by various actors in Bahrain's criminal justice system, and the UK is providing assistance to all of them. In the last four years, the UK government has paid more than 5 million pounds to train Bahraini police officers, prosecutors, judges, prison guards in the death row prison where these men were held, and a supposedly 'independent' torture watchdog which declared one of these men was lying about his torture allegations without ever conducting a medical examination.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The three men are the first people executed in Bahrain since <a href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/mde11/003/2010/en/" target="_blank">2010</a>, and the first Bahrainis executed since <a href="https://www.amnesty.org/en/documents/mde11/007/1996/en/" target="_blank">1996</a>. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The execution came less than a week after Bahrain's highest court <a href="http://www.reprieve.org.uk/press/three-executions-bahrain-imminent-without-urgent-action/" target="_blank">upheld</a> their death sentence on Monday 9 January 2017. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> There are now concerns about two other men on Bahrain's death row who are also at imminent risk of execution, <a href="http://www.reprieve.org.uk/case-study/mohammed-ramadan/" target="_blank">Mohammed Ramadan</a> and Husain Moosa. Both say they were tortured into providing false confessions at the same police station as the three men who were executed today.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <h3 style="text-align: justify;"> Torture</h3> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The executions went ahead despite serious concerns that their convictions were based on evidence obtained under torture.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A UN Special Rapporteur, Dr Agnes Callamard, has called them “<a href="https://twitter.com/agnescallamard" target="_blank">extrajudicial killings”</a>.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> During his police interrogation, Mr Mushaima was beaten, electrocuted and sexually assaulted. Although he was illiterate, he was forced to sign a document that he could not read.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Mr al-Samea, a school teacher, was also tortured during his interrogation, including electric shocks to his genitals and suspending him from the ceiling. He was sentenced to death even though his school provided an alibi letter.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The third man, Ali al-Singace, was just a teenager when he was convicted in absentia. His mother says he was also tortured into making a false confession after police arrested him.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Their families were summoned to Bahrain's Jau prison on Saturday for their final visit, although jail authorities refused to tell them that this was what was happening. They describe being surrounded by over 50 police officers and heightened security procedures at Jau.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <h3 style="text-align: justify;"> UK complicity</h3> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The UK Foreign Office has spent over £5 million in aid money on reforming Bahrain's human rights record since protests swept the Gulf kingdom in 2011.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> However, Reprieve has evidence that this aid program failed to protect the three men from torture and execution, and actually contributed to their abuse.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Documents obtained by Reprieve, and reported in the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jan/14/uk-links-bahrain-torture-prisons-yarls-wood" target="_blank">Observer</a> today, reveal that <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jan/14/uk-links-bahrain-torture-prisons-yarls-wood" target="_blank">Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons</a> helped plan inspections of custody facilities in Bahrain, including the CID station where all three men were tortured (both before and after the inspection.) The authorities have been cracking down on dissent mainly by the Shi'ite majority complaining of discrimination by the island's Sunni rulers. The last execution was carried out in 2008.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Calls for the protests were issued on social media after the families of the three young men - Abbas al-Samea, Sami Mushaima and Ali al-Singace - said they had been summoned to visit their loved ones at Jau prison.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">The men, who were convicted in 2015 of a bomb attack that killed three police officers - two Bahrainis and an Emirati - had maintained their innocence and rights groups have said confessions were obtained under torture. Bahrain denies using torture.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Prison authorities did not explain the reason for the summons to the families but gave them a telephone number to collect their sons' personal belongings, according to social media reports.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">News of the possible impending executions prompted calls on social media for protests, drawing hundreds of people onto the streets. He was found guilty of killing his two children on 31 January 2016. He called the police following the incident, before trying to kill himself.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">His lawyer will appeal the death sentence. If the sentence is upheld by the Supreme Court, Kiryl Kazachok will appeal directly to the President for clemency. It is highly probable that the sentence will be upheld and his clemency denied, leaving him at risk of execution shortly afterwards.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">No warning is given of the date or time of execution and no final meeting with relatives is granted. Death row inmates are executed with a shot to the back of the head. In accordance with Belarusian law, their bodies are not returned to their families for burial, nor is the location of the burial site disclosed.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Belarus is the only country in Europe and Central Asia which continues to use the death penalty.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Amnesty International opposes the death penalty in all cases without exception. It violates the right to life, as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This sentence, which follows the execution of four persons earlier this year, goes against the commitments made by Belarusian authorities to consider the introduction of a moratorium on the death penalty”, – says spokesperson statement on the European External Action Service (EEAS), reacting on the sentencing of Kazachok, convicted for murder of his own children Kira (9) and Vlad (17). After committing the crime, Kazachok went to his former spouse and confessed to her. According to the prosecution the double murder was meant as a revenge to the mother of the children, who intended to divorce Kazachok.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">“The European Union opposes capital punishment in all cases. It fails to act as a deterrent to crime and represents an unacceptable denial of human dignity. We miss him all the time.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"It's important to stand up against the death penalty."</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mr Sukumaran, who attended the opening night with mum Raji and sister Brintha, said art gave his brother an outlet and the paintings showed the power of redemption.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Myuran Sukumaran found a passion for art and painted hundreds of portraits, including a series featuring each Bali 9 member, while incarcerated in Bali's Kerokoban Jail and from his final incarceration on <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nusa_Kambangan" target="_blank">Nusakambangan Island</a>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sukumaran and fellow Bali 9 member Andrew Chan were executed by Indonesian authorities on Nusakambangan Island in April 215.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Chan's brother Michael also attended the opening night of the exhibition, which is on display at Campbelltown Arts Centre as part of the Sydney Festival.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mr Chan said the paintings were excellent and showcased what Sukumaran tried to do.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">"He made mistakes but he rehabilitated and this is what you see," he said.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mr Chan said he and his family had their good days and bad days and he hoped something good would come out of the situation.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sukumaran's lawyer Julian McMahon also attended the launch and described how he watched his client mature from a naive and angry young man to a person who reformed and found a passion for art and tried to make life better for the other prisoners in the jail.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Campbelltown Mayor George Brticevic officially opened the exhibition and became emotional as he commended the bravery of the Sukumaran family for attending the event.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">He said he had served as a police officer for 22 years and the attendance of the family at the opening night was the bravest thing he had seen.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; Three executions in Bahrain imminent without urgent action

A former Bahraini MP has welcomed reports that the King has signed off on the executions. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">All of the men were tortured by police after their arrest and at least two say they signed false confessions under duress. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mr Mushaima was forced to sign documents despite being illiterate. He is a relative of a prominent opposition politician, but has never been involved in activism. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mr al-Samea, a school teacher, was admitted to hospital for surgery as a result of his interrogation. He made complaints against the police which were investigated by UK-trained oversight institutions, however they claimed he had wounded himself resisting arrest. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Mr al-Singace was arrested as a teenager and convicted in absentia. La majorité des condamnés à mort sont coupables de trafic de drogue ou d'homosexualité, et sont souvent issus de minorités ethniques ou religieuses. C'est un message adressé aux Kurdes et aux Afghans, qui représentent le prolétariat local. Ils exécutent même des mineurs. Leur code pénal, c'est la charia. Et ils s'y tiennent. » </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Pour rendre le « spectacle » le plus macabre possible, les autorités iraniennes, qui exécutent essentiellement par pendaison, ont décidé de mettre en place une graduation de l'horreur. Selon la sentence, la peine capitale peut s'effectuer sous deux formes différentes. La première consiste à « lâcher » le pendu. Dans sa chute, sa nuque se brise et le pauvre bougre décède rapidement. La seconde prouve que la barbarie ne connaît aucune limite. C'est celle qu'a subie Saeed T. à Neyriz. Le condamné est pendu par traction, accroché à une grue qui s'élève jusqu'à ce que ses pieds ne touche plus le sol. La mort par suffocation est alors beaucoup plus lente et douloureuse. Contacté par ECPM, le fabricant japonais de ces grues a accepté de demander à l’État iranien d'arrêter d'utiliser son matériel pour ce type d'activité. Visiblement sans succès.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><h3 style="text-align: justify;">La FIFA répond enfin</h3><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Le 6 décembre dernier, non sans quelques relances, la FIFA a enfin répondu au courrier d'ECPM. Et c'est Fatma Samoura, la secrétaire générale, qui s'y est collée. En anglais, elle indique à Raphaël Chenuil-Hazan qu'elle a bien pris note de « l'incident » qui a eu lieu à Neyriz, et que « la FIFA condamne ce type d'action, qui par sa nature, viole fondamentalement la dignité inhérente à chaque être humain » . Et par conséquent, elle ne manquera pas d'aborder le sujet « lors de ses futurs échanges avec la Fédération iranienne de football » . Enfin, la Sénégalaise conclut en signalant au directeur d'ECPM que, comme l'exige le nouvel article 3 de ses statuts, « la FIFA s'engage à respecter les droits de l'homme internationalement reconnus, et s'efforce de promouvoir leur protection. Cet engagement implique des efforts pour prévenir et atténuer les impacts négatifs sur les droits de l'homme de tiers en relation directe avec nos opérations. He was sentenced to death by the Malekan Revolutionary Court on June 10, 2013 and then he was exiled to Maragheh Prison," a confirmed source tells Iran Human Rights. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">According to reports received by Iran Human Rights, there are four other prisoners in Maragheh Prison who are in imminent danger of execution.
